I'm driving through a landscape cut from pages of a magazine

The journey is long and I have not brought with me enough to think about

So thoughts, unbound, come to me

I think of something else

Of when I was a child and my mother told me to think of something else

Above me a hint of blue sky, promising a hope for a wish for a time that will come, a brightened day

But I have been driving a long time and the landscape, cut from a magazine, changes so slowly

I sit up to try to see the road ahead, unrolling under me, the scattered asphalt skittering away from the tires, humming, sound mixing with the radio playing music, drifting

No wind stirs the trees; the leaves, scattered on the ground, are still, and I cut through without disturbing them, only a shade passing, cut from the same

I find that people most respond to the music that I write most quickly and without too much thought. My most melancholy music, and I think my favorite of the music you sent me and the most affecting, is the simplest. I have an intellectual desire to add and make complex, but I will suppress that for our project. I will somehow find a simple place, a simple place in my thoughts and in my heart, a direct and simple locus that connects in a direct way to this idea of sadness, to the connection between you and me, a music that shifts moods slightly and slowly, at the tempo of the shadows changing in the studio, shades of grey, but with flaring rays of the sun sometimes scintillating and sparking across, so bright that we have to look away.

I made two because I just couldn't squeeze it down any further, although now, as they are in the mail, I'm finding myself fretting that I shouldn't have put that piece in and should have put this other tune in its place. I tried to stick to just melancholy, and it's all things that I like, and there is a bit of a resurrection which I put there to uplift you at the end. I hope you will find some of them so very pretty.
